After 116 years in business, we have learned a thing or two along the way. First is to treat your customers with the utmost respect and always provide to them a quality product at a fair price. Build relationships along the way so some day we can enjoy meeting the future generations of families as they come in and know we are here to help with their home improvement needs. Second is to treat staff like they are family. We wouldn't be where we are today without the commitment and loyalty of our staff. We believe in them and they believe in us. The longevity of our staff breeds the depth of knowledge, experience and resources that today's home owner desperately needs. Our staff on average has spent 25 years with us, many approaching 40 years working for our company. YouTube videos have nothing on our experience, come check out how we can help with your project!
Company History:
Chelsea Lumber Company has been a bedrock of the community for over a century. Our company dates back to 1908 and has been owned in all or in part by the Daniels Family since the 1920's. We opened our doors as Chelsea Lumber, Grain & Coal Co. on January 2, 1926. Our headquarters at that time was a 3 story brick building at the corner of Main Street and the railroad tracks, which is now the site of Chelsea Milling Co., makers of the popular Jiffy Mix.
Our former President and Co-Owner, the late Bob Daniels, began working here part time, shoveling coal, while a student at Chelsea High School in the 1940's. In those days, our motto was "Where the Home Begins" and it remains so til this day.
In 1952, responding to shifts in our customer's needs, we changed our name to Chelsea Lumber Company. We eventually outgrew our space and in 1983 we moved to where our current headquarters at 1 Old Barn Circle, Chelsea. This 20,000 square foot showroom and 70,000 square foot warehouse gave us plenty of space to grow into and provide additional materials and resources for our growing clientele.
In 2007, Chelsea Lumber expanded our reach within the neighboring communities of Saline and Bridgewater when we acquired Bridgewater Lumber Company. Bridgewater Lumber had been owned in part by the Finkbeiner Family, since 1938, when the family purchased the business from the Pardee brothers from Clinton, Michigan. Cousin's, Ron and Gary Finkbeiner, took over ownership of the family business in the late 1970's and grew it into a very successful business.
Bridgewater Lumber acquired Saline Mercantile in 1968 which allowed them to open a second location serving the Saline community. In 1975, Bridgewater Lumber suffered the loss of a barn in a warehouse fire. The original store was then demolished and a new store was built near the original site.
In 1980, the Saline store moved to its current location at 600 East Michigan Avenue. A fire in November 1993 destroyed the store and part of an adjoining warehouse. A new Saline store was built on the same site the following year, along with a new barn out back. In 1998, the Saline store added a 2,000 square foot showroom to highlight doors, windows and moldings.
Throughout the years, our services have steadily grown to make us the one-stop resource for a full range of materials, supplies and services for home building and home improvements. We're the place to get the best materials and the most expert advice for any homeowner or professional contractor in the Southeast Michigan region. We proudly employ approximately 140 knowledgeable staff who are always at your service, stop by today to see how we can help!
